“We are One”

 We Are One LA Clippers

God overlooked the times when people didn’t know any better. But now he commands everyone everywhere to turn to him and change the way they think and act.

Acts 17:30 Names of God Bible (NOG)

We are One in the sense of our value to our creator and to one another. Any person or group that would yield to the hatred of racism should be exposed and their victims protected. The next victims could be any of us.

Over the past few days Donald Sterling’s discourse has been covered from all angles and the actions taken by the NBA along with it’s Commissioner should be commended. The message on the LA Clippers Website front page reads “We are One” and now it looks as if the dust has settled, all is well and we can go play ball just as we always have any other Playoff Season.

NoSoFast2But in the Words of College Football Analyst  Lee Corso “Not so Fast my Friend”.  “We are One” in more ways than we would ever admit to.

According to the latest news outlets, our world would seem to be a very black and white place figuratively speaking. Once we can Identify the villain in whatever situation, then we can go back to our lives, justify our actions or inactions and never really look into the mirror.

“WASHINGTON – The Justice Department announced today the largest monetary payment ever obtained by the department in the settlement of a case alleging housing discrimination in the rental of apartments. Los Angeles apartment owner Donald T. Sterling has agreed to pay $2.725 million to settle allegations that he discriminated against African-Americans, Hispanics and families with children at apartment buildings he controls in Los Angeles. The settlement must be approved by U.S. District Judge Dale S.”

By Dennis Norman, on November 3rd, 2009

There are two ways to look at the inaction of  many who could have acted upon the obvious to the extent that  Sterling’s last episode of outlandish behavior would have been just another meaningless private conversation.

First of all, we hear those  that would say that “he was having a private conversation and how many of us have said shameful, hurtful, derogatory things ourselves in the quiet unrecorded confines of our lives.” (“We are One” ) This is the point at which our neat, clearly defined world of Black and White begins to turn a little Gray.

Second, we must ask ourselves an important question. Did the demagoguery against the of the nameless faceless few so-called Lower class minorities who were hurt in the housing discrimination of 2009, not mean as much as millionaires, the money changers, elite athletes and corporate interest of our society? (“We are One”)

“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak All Eyes on Youout – because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak out for me.” -Martin Niemöller

The decisive action taken by the NBA Got it right, and  Justice prevailed. However, was the opportunity for earlier justice was lost, therefore enabling Sterling continue to profit from arguably the most diverse of all sports leagues?  Were we all; League, Fans, Sponsors and Society caught sleeping at the switch by looking the other way? (“We are One”).

Going forward, we must value of every person hurt through the practice of racism and they can never be overlooked.

“And the King will reply to them, Truly I tell you, in so far as you did it for one of the least [in the estimation of men] of these My brethren, you did it for Me”
